Fr Terry’s Teaching…

The weekend obligation is back this weekend. I really encourage each of you to make a commitment to pray for each other as we go through these changes the Bishop has asked of us.  In many ways these are confusing times and Bishop DeGrood is working hard to be the best shepherd he can for our Diocese.  Naturally we are all over the place in dealing with the virus.  This is a time for prayer for ourselves, for our parish, for our Bishop and Diocese.
Someone I taught with when I was in the Twin Cities, was a man named Kevin Zenner. Kevin had studied to be a Jesuit, but after 3 years decided God was calling him to the vocation of marriage. So why am I telling you about Kevin? He recently won an award from the University of Notre Dame Teaching Human Dignity nation-wide contest.  To help his students in advanced morality class (which has a section on poverty and economics) understand what some of the people in our nation are going through, he has them do a project of awareness.  These students are just starting to know all the extra costs of living that they will soon face. The project is that each student will search for a job of a fictional single mother with two children, one of them an infant. They are assigned to research different cities. What are the costs for things like: rent, car insurance, transportation, health insurance, day care, a week’s worth of groceries, and other items.
The students are utterly amazed by how hard it is for women in this situation. What especially blew them away, was the cost of child care in order for them to have a job.  In almost every situation, the day care cost was almost everything they were earning from their job. They have to research job opportunities, what they pay, what the hours are, and what qualifications are required of the worker.  While knowing the cost of living is valuable, the project also looks at how society can help the poor. Kevin says that the discussion and analysis, which follows completion of the projects is the greatest fruit of the class. He asks the students what should they do, as people, as human beings?  As Kevin says: It really brings us back to morality. How best to follow Jesus’ consistent care for others? How best to love our neighbor? To recognize how Jesus treats all people with dignity and how He responds to their needs.
Something to share from the book I am reading: God would not have given anyone the gift of life if He did not intend it to be free, especially from sin and evil.
